The major experience in Asia is the food especially in Malaysia. Therefore in our opinion, we feel that Malaysia is an ideal place to try a huge variety of food which sometimes might be a bit weird but mostly incredible food. Additionally food is always one of the topics you will be asked in a conversation as a foreigner. For example, how you are evaluating and liking the food in the country. Because of the remarkableness of the food here, the locals Would encourage you to eat several meals to be able to try all the food. There are a lot of traditional meals and type of food for each nation. So by visiting Malaysia you can expect a big range of Indian, Chinese, Japanese, local Malay, Iran food and many others.
It took awhile for us to get used to the variety of food available in Malaysia. In general, we feel that the food here is different compared to the western food because we can have a delicious lunch for very cheap, about RM7 – 10. Furthermore, the taste of the different meals are very unique. We would go to a nearby Chinese Restaurant almost every other day for traditional Chinese Food. At first, we were focussed on the meals which were common to us or easy to interpret the ingredients, like Sweet and Sour Chicken Rice, or Black Pepper Beef or as a remarkable Meal the Orange Chicken. But after a while we took a step forward and decided to try the whole menu from top to bottom. We had the Cantonese Ying Yong or Tom Yam Fried Rice and a Special Butter Chicken which tasted extremely good by combining it with a fresh iced lemon tea. In summary, the Chinese food was really tasty and ideal as an everyday food,. We would just rotate between the rice and noodles so it won’t get boring.
We were also regular customers of Indian food restaurants. The Indian restaurants has a great range of delicious traditional meals like roti Chanai or in general Roti which is a really flat pancake flipped and rotated in the air to make it thin. After that it’s just fried and served with several sauces. As a starter or little snack it’s definitely the best. Mostly a Roti Chanai in our case was followed by a Tandoori chicken and Naan bread.
.These are the most typical dishes because both are made in the traditional Tandoori Oven, which can be found only in Indian restaurants. Other than that, there are a lot more variety of food in this type of restaurant.
The third most important type of food you have to try is the Malaysian food. Sadly, we confined ourselves to just having the common dishes like the typical Nasi Lemak, which is made out of coconut rice, dried fish and a spicy chilli sauce on top. The rice is normally wrapped in a banana leaf and is a typical Malay breakfast. For lunch, you should try out a delicious but really hot and spicy Laksa. It's a soup with noodles, eggs, chicken and a lot of chilli in it. For dessert, you definitely have to try the weirdest looking dessert we have ever seen in our lifetime which is called Chendol. It’s shaved ice mixedwith many ingredients such as beans, corn, jelly worms, coffee and caramel sauce. Almost all of us love it.
The best and most exiting way to get to know about all these type of different food is to have a look at the so-called food courts. We were glad to know some locals who brought us there and showed us hidden places where all the locals eat.
As a German or in general, a western foreigner, you will be really shocked at the chaos in the food courts. Most of the food courts are located in big halls or closed places where up to 100 food stands are placed side by side. This gives you the opportunity to try whatever you want to eat. It is extremely interesting to watch the people sitting there and enjoying their different and often strange looking food.
The system to order food is an uncommon thing you will see by going to such places. You will normally walk around from stand to stand and have a look at what you are interested in. You can find strange things like snails, shark fin soup (please don’t choose that, its a crime in our opinion!! ), stingray, every type of meat, noodles, rice etc. So if you have found something you want to eat, just order it by the owner or staff in the stand and tell them your place where you are sitting. After ordering you just have to wait for only a few minutes, and the food will be brought to your table.
Only after receiving your food, you have to pay. Like everywhere in Malaysia, the price is not that much for incredible good food.
Another difference between the Asian and Western culture, if you are having dinner with some friends the food will normally be shared, so that everyone can try different things. This is a great experience and gives you the feeling of eating with family.
We fully recommend everyone to ask the locals for such a place and to go there as it will definitely impress you and will be some of the moments and happenings you will never forget in your Malaysia trip.
