Merry Christmas from Langkawi

At the morning of the 22nd of December we had to get up at 6 o’clock in the morning because we had to catch the first bus to Langkawi. We took the taxi to get to the bus station in Bukit Jalil. It seemed like a scout was already waiting for us when we arrived at the bus terminal. He guided us to a ticket counter where we bought five tickets (RM35 each) to Kuala Perlis where we would then take the ferry to Langkawi. The bus trip to the harbor took about 6 hours.

At Kuala Perlis, we bought the tickets for the ferry and waited in a big waiting hall. After a while the ferry arrived and we could get on board. During the ferry ride, a Malaysian comedy love film was playing on TV. After one and a half hour, we arrived at the harbor of Kuala Kedah. There we took a cab to Pantai Cenang were we finally arrived at the AB Motel.

AB Motel was an ingenious hostel which was located facing a beautiful beach. All five of us rented a room which normally was for 3 or 4 people. Thereafter, we spent the whole day at the beach. The sand was very fine and the water was crystal clear. There also was a wide range of water sport available such as boat trips, banana-boat rides, parasailing and many other activities.
On the first evening, we rewarded ourselves during dinner with a big fishplate in a local restaurant and some beer on the beach. The main advantage of Langkawi is that it is a duty free island. Normally beer is very expensive in Malaysia but here, alcohol is much cheaper and we had the luxury of drinking cheaper priced beers.
We spent the whole next day on the beach, playing with the Frisbee, walked around on the beach and enjoyed some Coconuts.

At noon we realized that we were red like lobsters and had to get out of the sun, so we walked through the city and did some shopping. In the evening, we visited a bar and enjoyed the live music from a very good local Reggae band.

The next day was Christmas, hence we decided to search for a nice restaurant where we can have delicious dinner. We found the only restaurant in Langkawi with tablecloth and we decided to book a table for our Christmas dinner.  In the evening we dressed up and we went to the restaurant which was beautiful located on the beach. We ordered the special Christmas menu with only fish. I have to say it was one of the best dinners I have ever had. The insiders’ tip to anyone who plans to go to Langkawi, is to indulge in a dinner at the Brasserie. It is worth every cent.
The next day, we went for an island hopping trip, which was very cheap it just cost RM25. The organizer picked us up at 2pm in front of the hotel and drove us to a little harbor with many small boats.

First the captain drove us to a beautiful island called Pulau Dayang Bunting. The island looks like a lying pregnant woman, which is why it is also “called island of pregnant maiden”. The water there was crystal clear and everywhere were little rocky islands.

The next stop was the sweet water lake in the center of the island called “Lake of the Pregnant Maiden”. After that, we stopped at two other wonderful beaches and an eagle reservoir. All together the trip took about 5 hours and it was so much fun. We saw wonderful places and the weather was superb.

The following day, we decided to rent some motorbikes and explore the island on our own. That was the best decision we made. We saw amazing places where normally no foreigners and tourists would go to. There were cows walking on the streets, monkey running across the streets and we had a delicious meal in a local diner. We went to beaches where only the locals relaxed and had their barbeque.  One day was enough to drive round the whole island and the renting of the bikes was just about RM30. Langkawi does not have heavy traffic, so we rode on the streets by ourselves most of the time. On the evening we decided to go to the Reggae bar again. And surprisingly the same band played again, like every other evening.

The next day we decided to make another beach day, with coconuts and Frisbee again, because our sunburn healed.  But unfortunately at the end of the day we had sunburn again.
At first, we wanted to go home on Sunday but the man in the bus station told us that all the bus tickets were already sold out, so we had to extend our holiday another day. Luckily, our hotel room was still available for us to rent for an additional day.

On Monday, it was finally time to pack our bags and return to Kuala Lumpur, our new home. Unfortunately, our journey home took even longer than the journey to Langkawi. It took a whole day and it was very exhausting because we had a very rundown bus. But finally we reached home and everybody was happy to stay in our new apartment.
