Public Transport in Kuala Lumpur

The first question after arriving at KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport) is how to get from the airport, which is located about 50km from downtown Kuala Lumpur. You will have three choices. You can go by bus (RapidKL), taxi or and this might be the easiest and fastest way – you can use the KLIA-Ekspres.
The KLIA-Ekspre

The KLIA-Ekspres (Bild0) links the airport directly with KL Central which is the main transportation hub in Kuala Lumpur in only 28 minutes. The cost of a one-way ticket is about RM35. RM35 is about 8 to 9 euro. This depends on the exchange rate.

Kuala Lumpur's public transportation system consists of 3 Light Rail Transit lines operated by RapidKL – the bus

the futuristic KL Monorail

looping through the Golden Triangle and the KTM Komuter – the railway -

for trips to the northern, southern & western suburbs. Fares are cheap from RM1 and up.
The only major problem with the KTM Komuter – is that it is very unreliable. So it could happen that you stand upon the station platform and the train does not arrive on time.

Getting around with the city's public transportation system is fairly efficient and convenient. The city, like many other developing cities, suffers from traffic jams periodically throughout the day.
During rush hours, it will be worthwhile to combine different public transport to evade the traffic jams. For example: by using the monorail to the station closest to your destination and thereafter take a taxi for the final stage.

Certainly you can get around only by using only the taxi.

Kuala Lumpur is one of the cities in Southeast Asia with cheater Taxis rates. There are taxi stands all over town but you can hail a taxi pretty much anywhere you like.

ATTENTION!!! You should never take a taxi with fixed rates. This might be much more expensive than using the taximeter. Sometimes it is a challenge to get the driver to use the meter. Normally it is very cheap if the driver uses the meter. You need to pay an extra 50% surcharge between midnight and 6 o`clock in the morning.
We made the experience that many drivers tried to cheat us. For example, we had to pay the 50% midnight charges even before midnight. Another example was that the taxi driver doubled the price of the meter after we arrived at the apartment before midnight. The best way to handle this situation is to pay the price of the meter and leave the taxi immediately.
