How to find an apartment

Before you can find an apartment, you have to decide where exactly you want to stay in Malaysia for your semester abroad at UiTM. There are four main alternatives: the campus, Shah Alam where the university is located, downtown KL and somewhere in between.

Living on campus means you will have to follow the rules of the university. There are different accommodations on the campus but the only acceptable one for European standards is “Kristal College”. But it is not sure that you will get a room there. So we decided to find an apartment by ourselves.
Shah Alam has its advantages in being close to the campus. Therefore you have a short way to your courses and it is cheap to get there. However, it has to be mentioned that Shah Alam is in the main a Muslim city. Therefore it is hard to find an apartment there if males and females want to live together unless you are not married. Our insider tip for Shah Alam is to stay at the condominium called “Acapella“.

Downtown KL is in comparison to Shah Alam very far away from the university. This regards to high costs for getting there by taxi or Komuter. You also have high time efforts for the trips. Nevertheless it is a lot more exciting to life in a very lively city. It is nearly nice to stay there everywhere.

A combination of the advantages of both places is to get an apartment in between of Shah Alam and KL-Downtown. This area includes the cities Petaling Jaya, Setia Jaya and Subang Jaya. It is 20 minutes away from the campus and also downtown can be reached within the same time by cab. Furthermore there are shopping malls, clubs, bars, restaurants, spa clubs and theme parks where you can enjoy your free time and purchase whatever your heart desires.  Also they do not care about male and female living together as they do in Shah Alam. Nice places to stay are located around the “Sunway Pyramid” and condominiums called “Casa tiara” or “E-tiara”.

The first step to get an overview of available accommodations is to check the website “iproperties.com.my” and/or to buy a “Star” newspaper for checking the real estate ads. Secondly you have to look for the rental fees and how much you want to spend. Besides you need an apartment which is fully furnished. Otherwise you have to buy furniture, kitchen appliances and so on. Thirdly you have to call the agents who announced the offers of available accommodations. Everything works by phone in Malaysia. Emails are infrequently responded. Sometimes the agents have more opportunities than posted online or on paper. If you need a cell phone number of the agent where we get our apartments from, just do not hesitate to ask and we will hand it over to you as soon as possible.
In summary, we five decided to get an apartment between the university and KL-downtown and found a nice one at the “Sunway Palmville Resort Condominium” in Petaling Jaya. Our apartment has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a living room, a kitchen and is fully furnished. We live on the 8th floor and therefore we have an overview over the surrounding area. Even the Petronas Twin Towers are sometimes visible at about a 15km distance. Up to this point, we can say that this was absolutely the right decision.
